The best way of ensuring that we can continue to enjoy all the flavour and aroma of good coffee is to protect the environment which contributes most to its production: nature.
Through the ReThink project, which aims at prolonging the life cycle of coffee, Delta Q is promoting the recycling of its product components and contributing to a more environmentally responsible society.
The ReThink project encourages recycling and re-use of the waste produced by consumption: used coffee grounds. With annual production of 20,000 tons of coffee, and a potential of twice that quantity of wet grounds, Delta is exploring the opportunities for recycling the waste produced by its activities and turning it into a resource. Started in 2009, ReThink has received financial support from the National Strategy Reference Board (QREN), making Delta the first company in Portugal to form an innovation cluster.
One of the results obtained from the project has been the creation of a special recycling system for used Delta Q capsules, which are stored and treated in the Delta Cafés plant at Campo Maior. Here the capsules are cut open and the plastic is separated from the grounds by decanting. Delta has Portugal's first capsule mill. UNIDEMI is still working on a system for extracting the grounds from the capsules to optimise the separation process, rationalising the use of energy and resources. The plastic from the capsules is sent to recycling partners, where it is incorporated into recycled objects in the urban environment such as flower-pots, litter bins and sun loungers.
Through this pioneering project, Delta Cafés has taken a leading role in sustainability.
To recycle your Delta Q capsules, you can:
- Leave them in Delta Q Shops (Lisbon and Oporto);
- Hand them in to the commercial departments of Delta Cafés;
- In the case of on-line purchases, request capsule collection from the delivery address (only in mainland Portugal).
